Bruce Matzel
CEO of Brandywine Lifestyle Communities
All of his life, Bruce Matzel has been an enthusiastic believer and achiever. He built his first new home in 1970. After the success of that home, from 1970 to 1979 he built approximately 200 more homes. At that time, he changed his focus to the hospitality business and began to build hotels and motels. He still retains ownership of the first motel he built in 1980. It was at this time he met Roger Mumford who became his partner within a year.
In 1985 the Matzel & Mumford Organization was formed in central New Jersey. Through one of the worst times in history for the building industry, October 1987 through 1991, Matzel & Mumford defied the odds and built a unique program to build and sell homes through those difficult years.
In 1992, Ernst & Young nominated Matzel & Mumford for “Entrepreneur of the Year” for their outstanding achievements from 1987 through 1991. Matzel & Mumford competed with strong and distinguished “dot com” companies for the award. The outcome resulted in Matzel & Mumford being recognized as the highly esteemed “Entrepreneur of the Year”. Matzel & Mumford instituted a philosophy created by the two principal owners, Bruce & Roger. The philosophy motivated every employee in the company to help them achieve their goals. The ultimate goal was to sell the Matzel & Mumford Organization to a public company. The commitment, drive and skills of over 100 dedicated managers and employees helped Bruce and Roger achieve their goal. In December of 1999, Matzel & Mumford was purchased by K. Hovnanian, a publicly held company.
